The Predator Has Screened, Here's What People Are Saying

People have been waiting for a solid Predator sequel for a long time. Is Shane Black's new effort finally the one fans have been looking for? The Predator screened last night as part of the Toronto International Film Festival so attendees were the first to get a glimpse at this new generation of the alien hunter. Is this movie the one you've been waiting for? Maybe? Reviews are actually quite varied, but while the film clearly isn't perfect, it's not without its charms either. CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell was in the audience last night and he says it's the best Predator sequel so far, and that isn't only because all the other ones sucked.

The Predator knows its role, acting as a fun, hyper-violent and often hilarious throwback to 1980s action horror, with clever kills and a memorable band of misfit anti-heroes. And while the bar by previous installments is ridiculously low, I don't think it oversteps to call this movie the best Predator sequel, and the only one that's close in tone to the Schwarzenegger-led jungle boogie that launched this franchise back in 1987.

If there is one common, and unexpected, thread running through the TIFF reactions to The Predator, it's that the movie is actually quite funny. Chris Evangelista with Slashfilm also recognizes the humor, and while he feels it may veer into the realm of stupid on occasion, it seems that overall that's not necessarily a bad thing.

While many responses are of the sort that would classify The Predator as, at the very least, "fun," not every response is quite as forgiving. Dread Central finds that some of the ideas in the new movie just don't work at all, though it doesn't think these will be deal-breakers for most viewers.

While most seem capable of finding something worthy of praise in The Predator, that certainly not the case for all. Variety finds the movie simply too busy, with so much going on that anything worthwhile simply gets lost, if it as ever there to begin with.

It's an exhaustingly energetic mess in which a coherent plot and credible characters aren't even on the cluttered menu.

So, in the final analysis, is The Predator good? As is often the case, that will depend on the viewer. If you're looking for an over the top spectacle with Shane Black's trademark humor combined with impressive deaths at the hands of a killer alien, then there's probably something to enjoy here. If you were expecting a dark, violent, horror movie, you may need to adjust those expectations.

With Matt Reeves The Batman finally starting to take off, fans have been putting their heads together and drumming up some ideas for the new cast. Since the writer/director has already teased the inclusion of a rogues gallery, there are tons of possibilities for our favorite actors to portray a few of the Dark Knights iconic villains. So, solve this puzzle: what about Simon Pegg as The Riddler? One artist has imagined the Mission: Impossible actor as the enigmatic Edward Nygma. Check it out:

I dont know about you, but Im into this! The fan art from ShatterverseEnt (via Reddit) is very much in line with the vision of The Batman, which Matt Reeves has said will be a noir tale. Since the Caped Crusader will also be tapping into his detective skills more than ever, facing the sneaky clues the Riddler leaves behind could certainly fit right into this kind of narrative.

The last time audiences saw The Riddler on the big screen in live action, he was cleverly played by Jim Carrey and worked with Tommy Lee Jones Two-Face, opposite Val Kilmers Bruce Wayne in 1995s Batman Forever. Riddler is a great choice to be featured among other villains and Pegg would certainly deliver a completely different take on the character than Carrey.

He could pull off healthy combination of sinister and entertaining. Pegg is no stranger to delivering a solid performance in beloved blockbusters, such as Scotty in the new Star Trek films and as Benji in the Mission: Impossible movies. The actor has also been a part of some comedy classics including Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Paul.

With the recent announcement of upcoming Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 coming in summer 2021 and 2022, Simon Pegg could be booked for the foreseeable future if he signs on for the final two installments to be helmed by Christopher McQuarrie. However, since Star Trek 4 doesnt look to be happening after being in development hell since 2015, The Batman could serve as a sweet replacement if he has the time for it.

So far, we know that Matt Reeves The Batman will not be featuring Ben Affleck as the titular hero. Bruce Wayne will be reportedly be played by a younger actor who has yet to be cast. Among the rogues gallery, Penguin will likely be one of the villains facing Batman. Well have to wait and see if Riddler ends up joining as well.

Would Natalie Portman Appear In Another Marvel Movie? Here's What She Says

The Thor franchise is feeling better than ever before thanks to Thor: Ragnarok, a movie that moves the franchise in a new (and funnier) direction. While the movie is near universally loved, the Thor series has not always been looked at so favorably and it may be telling that it abandons many of the side characters from the previous two movies. One of these characters was Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman. Portman had something of a falling out with Marvel Studios after Thor: The Dark World and while that experience was not so great for her, she's still open to coming back to the MCU down the road.

I'm completely open to everything, but I have no news about that.

Short but sweet! In an interview with ScreenRant, Natalie Portman was asked if she'd be open to reprising her role as Jane Foster in a Marvel movie in the future. Portman briefly answered that, yes, she's open to anything, but she has not gotten any calls about coming back.

Natalie Portman was reportedly not happy with the production of Thor: The Dark World. She was a big supporter of Patty Jenkins as director of the sequel, and she was apparently not happy when creative differences led to Jenkins leaving the project (she bounced back pretty well, I'd say) and Marvel hiring Alan Taylor instead. In addition, Jane Foster's role in The Dark World felt out of place among the high-fantasy concepts of the film and she never quite gelled with the Asgard setting. Even though she had no place in the story of Thor: Ragnarok, she was still written out of the movie through an arguably unceremonious throwaway line.

I think the bigger question here though is not will Jane Foster return, but do we want her to? She has never been a particularly big character and I can't say that her presence has been entirely missed in all this time. The main argument to bring her back is that Jane Foster becomes Thor in the comics, and while that is a really awesome storyline with lots of meat for an actress like Natalie Portman, I think that ship may have already sailed. It doesn't feel like Portman and Marvel are at the point where the studio would just make her the lead of her own franchise. Plus, with Tessa Thompson's fan-favorite Valkyrie now a part of the franchise, Marvel has perhaps a better option for a female franchise lead.

Maybe Jane Foster doesn't get to show up in Avengers: Infinity War, a movie almost everyone else gets to be in, but Natalie Portman will be starring in Annihilation, a really heavily buzzed sci-fi movie, opening in theaters on February 23, 2018.
