While all hope seemed lost following the end of Avengers: Infinity War, the post-credits scene gave us all hope when Nick Fury was able to get a message off to Captain Marvel. While this made fans very excited for the upcoming, and now soon to release Captain Marvel movie, it did raise one question. "You're calling her NOW?" It seemed like there had been some times in the past that a hero like Carol Danvers would have been useful, but Samuel L. Jackson says all those other problems the Earth has seen were no big deal compared to this one. According to Jackson...

She said only in emergencies. Other emergencies could be handled by the people who were present. Its just an alien invasion, thats something that could be handled. Half the population wasnt dying and flicking off and doing whatever. We finally have an emergency that I feel warrants her presence. This is unprecedented. How are you gonna fight that? I cant fight that. If Im not here, I need to find someone to come here who can handle it. All those people are ineffective. Theyre great for normal, everyday world disaster. But intergalactic badass who has all the Infinity Stones needs a bit more.

Clearly, Nick Fury has a very specific definition of "emergency" and even alien invasions and A.I. gone mad doesn't actually qualify. It certainly makes some sense. Fury's plan to create "The Avenger Initiative" comes at a point after the events of Captain Marvel so clearly, Fury isn't looking to call in his new friend at the first sign of something normal humans can't handle. He's planning on using others for those problems.

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, it doesn't seem that Nick Fury is really clear on exactly what is going on, but he knows that Earth's Mightiest Heroes are dealing with it, and when people start to turn to dust, he knows they've failed. At that point, the only option left is to grab your pager.

Samuel L. Jackson's opinion on why he never called Danvers before isn't the only one that makes sense. Director Anna Boden tells IGN that Fury likely didn't want to reveal her existence to the world unless it was necessary. Her co-director Ryan Fleck says Fury was probably considering pushing the panic button ion the first Avengers, but eventually decided against it.

By the time things escalate to the actual alien invasion, if the Avengers can't do the job, it's probably not going to matter too much.

On the plus side, Fury was right, and the Avengers were able to handle all threats prior to Infinity War. If the Earth had been invaded by aliens, Fury probably would have really wished he'd used that pager.

Expect said pager to play a small role in Captain Marvel, as we'll probably learn where it came from. Assuming it works, we'll see the results of pressing that button when Avengers: Endgame comes out in a couple months.

Crazy Rich Asians Box Office: August Has A New Romantic Comedy Hit

Hollywood has been talking about the arrival of Jon M. Chu's Crazy Rich Asians for months, and now that it's here it's a bonafide hit. The romantic comedy is not only the first American studio film since 1993's The Joy Luck Club to feature an all-Asian cast, but has been earning fantastic heaps of positive buzz. Making $25 million in a three day weekend wouldn't exactly be something to celebrate for a major tentpole project, but Crazy Rich Asians is definitely a victory for Warner Bros. as a mid-budget romantic comedy released in the middle of August. It had some interesting competition - which I'll get into in a second - but rode high on a wave of positive reviews and a strong mid-week release, and already it has made $34 million total domestically from a reported $30 million budget. It hasn't really gotten any play in other countries just yet, with many foreign territories pulling the trigger this upcoming week, but most of that will wind up being just a bonus at this point.

It's very possible that we will continue to see Crazy Rich Asians stay toward the top of the box office at least for the next few weeks. Not only has it received one of the best Rotten Tomatoes scores of the year so far, but it has also landed an impressive "A" on CinemaScore. It may start to fade when some bigger titles start to come back into fashion in mid-September, but there's a lot of runway between now and then.

It wasn't 100% clear if Crazy Rich Asians or The Meg would take the top spot (a battle of Warner Bros. vs. Warner Bros.), but both were expected top beat out the other newcomers - and that's exactly what happened. For starters, Peter Berg's Mile 22 ultimately made about half of what the number one film was able to pull in - which is not super awesome for star Mark Wahlberg. As a star the guy has proven reliable for at least $20 million openings in the last few years, and this performance is the weakest for a headlining turn since 2014's The Gambler (which made $9.1 million). Surely the reviews (it has a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes) have not helped.

Albert Hughes's Alpha, on the other hand, didn't have the same kind of expectations behind it - and it performed... fine. There has been some good word of mouth going around about the movie - a title that essentially tells the origin story of domesticated dogs - and it translated to an eight-figure opening. The feature has a reported budget of $51 million, which means it still has a bit of distance before making its money back, but the international numbers should help by the time its done showing on the big screen.

Will Crazy Rich Asians be able to pull off a two-peat? We'll have to wait and see, as it will be going toe-to-toe with a trio of new releases on Friday: the on-screens thriller Searching, the puppet-centric comedy The Happytime Murders, and the sci-fi action movie A.X.L. Why Mowgli Moving From Warner Bros To Netflix Is A Good Move, According To Andy Serkis

It's only been two years since Disney released its live action version of The Jungle Book in 2016 (which, understandably, was based off the studio's original 1967 animated movie of the same name), but already another adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's tale is arriving later this year. In development since 2012, Warner Bros' version of The Jungle Book, officially titled Mowgli, is a darker take on the story and was originally supposed to be released in theaters this October. However, it's been announced that Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to Mowgli, and the movie will instead be released on the streaming platform sometime next year. But as Andy Serkis, Mowgli's director and voice of Baloo, sees it, moving to Netflix is the right choice, as now the movie can be marketed better. Serkis explained:

I'm really excited about Netflix for Mowgli. Now, we avoid comparisons to the other movie and it's a relief not to have the pressure. I've seen the 3D version, and it's exceptional, a different view from the 2D version, really lush and with great depth, and there will be some kind of theatrical component for that. What excites me most is the forward thinking at Netflix in how to present this, and the message of the movie. They understand this is a darker telling that doesn't fit it into a four quadrant slot. It's really not meant for young kids, though I think it's possible that 10 or above can watch it. It was always meant to be PG-13, and this allows us to go deeper, with darker themes, to be scary and frightening in moments. The violence between animals is not gratuitous, but it's definitely there. This way of going allows us to get the film out without compromise.

As Andy Serkis detailed to Deadline, initially there was a race between Disney and Warner Bros to see which company would release their Jungle Book movie first. Eventually Serkis realized that Mowgli would need to come in second place due to how much time would be spent on the performance capture techniques and post-production. Now instead of Warner Bros releasing Mowgli in theaters, the studio has instead sold it to Netflix, marking the streaming platform's biggest acquisition of a finished film so far. Serkis still hopes that Mowgli will get a theatrical release at some point so that people can see how great the movie's 3D effects look, but for now, he feels that Netflix is a better home for Mowgli in the long run. He continued:

I think this is their largest acquisition, it's a big movie But I never looked at it as a big blockbuster movie. It's hard to quantify. It has the scale of a blockbuster, but it's somewhere between Life of Pi and an Apes movie. It has that reality to it, same as Okja had. We are talking about 2019 and circling dates. Netflix has allowed the film making that I wanted to do, to exist and they've created an atmosphere for me kind of storytelling I set out to do.

Netflix made a splash earlier this year when it bought The Cloverfield Paradox from Paramount for reportedly around $50 million (and subsequently advertising it during the Super Bowl and releasing it a few hours later), but to obtain Mowgli is another level of accomplishment. This is yet another example of Netflix stepping up its movie game, an area that it has lagged in when compared to its TV achievements. That said, given how The Cloverfield Paradox was critically received, I can't help but worry that Warner Bros passing Mowgli off to Netflix ends up being indicative of the movie's quality. Fingers crossed that isn't the case, mainly because Mowgli feels incredibly different than Disney's The Jungle Book.

Along with Andy Serkis, Mowgli's cast includes Rohan Chand as the eponymous protagonist, Christian Bale as Bagheera, Cate Blanchett as Kaa, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan and Naomi Harris as Nisha.
