Rambo 5 Has Added Its First New Actor

Sylvester Stallone has been teasing the development of Rambo 5 for months now, but in that time the casting department has been silent. We've known that Stallone will return as his second most iconic character in the sequel, but there has been no news regarding his co-stars. That period ended today, however, as Paz Vega has reportedly signed on for a key role and has become the second member of the movie's ensemble.

Titled Rambo 5: Last Blood (a reference to the original John Rambo movie, First Blood), the new film will see the titular hero facing off against the Mexican drug cartels when he learns that the daughter of a friend has been kidnapped. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paz Vega will be a key ally of the gun-loving Vietnam veteran John Rambo, playing a character named Carmen Delgado.

The trade report describes the character briefly, and notes that she has two significant connections to the main plot. The first is a professional connection, as she is a reporter whose beat is the Mexican drug trade. The second is that the young girl who is kidnapped is her sister.

Paz Vega's career started back in the late 1990s when roles on multiple Spanish television shows, but her big breakout came when she played the titular role in Sex and Lucia in 2001. She made her Hollywood debut opposite Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni in Spanglish, and has continued to go back and forth between work in Spain and America. Recently she was featured in the first season of the series The OA on Netflix.

While Paz Vega is the first actor we've heard about starring opposite Sylvester Stallone in Rambo 5: Last Blood, apparently that hasn't stopped the production for barreling ahead. The trade report revealing Vega's announcement notes that the movie is already shooting, with locations set up in Bulgaria and Spain. Adrian Grunberg, who previously directed the Mel Gibson action movie Get The Gringo, is at the helm for the second time in his career, with most of credits being for his work as a second unit director.

Sylvester Stallone is credited as the co-writer on the film with Matthew Cirulnick, whose most significant credit is the Amazon original series Absentia. The actor has had a hand in the scripts for all of the Rambo movies to date, so it makes all the sense in the world that he would have a hand in bringing the franchise to a close.

Millennium Films is producing the film, though exactly when and how it will wind up getting to audiences is unclear. Not only does the project not have a release date yet, but it also doesn't appear to have a domestic distributor. The mistake that critics made was reviewing the trailer instead of reviewing the film. They jumped to conclusions. Once people stake their claim, it's hard for them to withdraw.

It seems that Brian May feels that the critics went into _Bohemian Rhapsody _with preconceived notions that he feels they then needed to stand by in the final reviews, rather than give the complete film the fair shake it deserved.

It's certainly true that from the first trailers there were concerns raised about Bohemian Rhapsody. The trailers only showed Freddie Mercury's relationship with Mary Austin, leading many to wonder if the fact that Mercury was gay was going to be downplayed or ignored. When the film was released, it was clear that wasn't the case, but many still felt that the film lacked depth, giving us only a surface level look at the man and the band rather than the deep dive that a life like that of Freddie Mercury truly deserved.

While many of those critics likely wouldn't agree with the Golden Globes win for Bohemian Rhapsody, fewer would take issue with Rami Malek's win for Best Actor. Many of the same reviews that were critical of the film did point out Malek's transformative performance as Mercury as a high point for the film. He clearly gave the movie his all.

To be clear, overall the reviews of Bohemian Rhapsody are still positive. Review Aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 62% positive score, the reviews simply aren't overwhelmingly glowing in the way you often expect out of movies considered for the end of the year awards like the Golden Globes. Bohemian Rhapsody is actually one of the poorest performing films from a review standpoint to win the Golden Globe for Best Picture.

Whether or not critics really refused to give Bohemian Rhapsody a fair review, as May claims according to Yahoo, is an ultimately impossible question to answer. Lots of movies review poorly upon release before time and distance eventually convince many that the film is actually good. There's always the possibility that will happen here, and the Golden Globes certainly saw something in the film worthy of the prize.

Of course, critics don't vote for the Golden Globes, and they also don't vote for the Oscars, If critics are alone in their regard for Bohemian Rhapsody, and the film's box office shows that the average movie fan also loved the film, then we could see the critics be proven "wrong" yet again.

Chris Pratt's ascension into a bonafide movie star happened due to his role in a trio of franchises: Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, and The Lego Movie. The latter was a massive hit when it arrived in 2014, and helped to spawn a number of spinoffs. But the main franchise is getting its first sequel with The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, bringing back the motley crew of minifigure characters, and introducing a few newcomers in the process.

The Lego Movie 2 has a ton of pressure to deliver for the generations of fans, especially after the heartwarming ending of the first film. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were tasked with crafting a follow-up, and recently told CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg some of the ideas that got scrapped on the way to theaters-- including a sequence set in a Lego convention. As Lord told it,

We started with this idea of, lets try to tell a story from the brothers point of view, and the sisters point of view at the same time. And see what its like when their two imaginations happen to come together. That was sort of the basic thing. There were other thoughts in there, there was a whole set piece at a Lego convention. But ultimately it really felt like the story needed to take place in their home. And that the stairs between the basement and the sisters room was like the main arena for them to play in. It got a bit big. And it lost the focus on this brother and sister dynamic that seemed to be the heart of the movie.

While putting Emmet, Lucy, and Lego Batman smack dab in the middle of a convention seems like the makings of an excellent action sequence with plenty of comedic opportunities, Phil Lord and Chris Miller ultimately decided to make the Lego Movie 2 a more capsulated story. Like the first movie, it's set in a regular household which happens to contain a massive collection of Legos.

From the trailers The Lego Movie 2: The Second One is taking quite a bit of inspiration from Mad Max, showing what happened to Bricksburg after the Duplo invasion from the first film. The upcoming animated blockbuster will once again be poking fun at itself, including a new character that is an amalgamation of Chris Pratt's myriad roles.

It looks like the directors of The Lego Movie 2 took special care with what they included in the upcoming sequel. And as such, some ideas had to be left behind so the story could be more purposeful.
