A Big MCU Reunion Happened On The Set Of Star Wars The Mandalorian
Star Wars might be a galaxy far, far, away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the new Star Wars series The Mandalorian was the home for a big MCU reunion. Jon Favreau, who is producing the series, launched the MCU with the original Iron Man, and he was recently visited by a host of other MCU directors, including Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Thor: Ragnarok's Taiki Waittiti and Ant-Man and the Wasp's Peyton Reed. If you include the upcoming Avengers 4, the assembled directors in this image are responsible for a total of nine of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's a pretty impressive track record here even though one of them was Iron Man 2.
It seems that a few friends decided to go by the set of The Mandalorian, the upcoming series that will debut on the Disney+ streaming service that will launch next year, in order to support their fellow director. It's possible Taika Waititi was there in his capacity as a director, as we know that he will be helming one of the episodes of the new series, but the other guys don't have any official position within the show, as far we know, anyway. Maybe they're all being given cameos as Star Wars aliens, that sort of thing has certainly happened before.
The responses to the image are fairly predictable and they fall into a pair of camps. the first half of the responses are using the moment to advocate for James Gunn, the director who has been fired from his position within the MCU. Those that felt the decision was unfair are wishing he was part of the picture as well.
The rest of the responses on the Russo Brothers Twitter feed are ignoring the picture entirely and just demanding the first trailer for Avengers 4. Many rumors have indicated we could see the trailer as early as today. The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War dropped this time last year, and since the film is being released at the same time next year, it's very possible that could happen.
While Jon Favreau has certainly found plenty to keep him busy outside the MCU, from The Lion King to The Mandalorian, the future is less clear for the other directors. Without knowing the outcome of Avengers 4 it's impossible to know which character will be getting future sequels (other than Spider-Man, of course). It's also possible these directors are just ready to move on to other things.
Of course, with several Marvel series also planned for Disney+, it's possible these directors could do both. They could take a job creating a series as Favreau has done, which would certainly be a change of pace, but stay within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Whatever these guys do, it will almost certainly be great. And when they do it, they'll probably get visited by the rest of the MCU directing fraternity for more great pictures.

In fact, even if you look at Unbreakable as a completely standalone movie (which it was for 17 years), it works even better than when it first came out, because now much more of the general public can appreciate its superhero tropes and themes.
