Why The New Mutants Being Delayed Is A Good Thing, According To Maisie Williams
Originally 2018 had three X-Men-related movies: scheduled: Deadpool 2, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants. Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix are still slated for this year (with the former movie actually arriving a month earlier), but for The New Mutants, the wait will be much longer, as it was moved from this April to February 2019. However, as one of the movie's stars, Maisie Williams, sees it, the delay will likely end up making The New Mutants an even better movie since there will be more time to work out the kinks. Williams said:
Actually, I think it's for the better. I think it's good that we've got more time. We're not so strapped and up against it. It give us time- it gives me time to get to know the project once its finalized. Films take a real different shape after you finish shooting, and after they have edited. Sometimes you watch a movie and with the score, etc, it's a completely different film than the one you had in mind. I guess you only know that when you have just done the premiere or whatever. Your spending your whole life working on this film that actually you don't know much about at all. It's quite nice that there is the time, to you know, make it the best that one can and familiarize ourselves with it and when it comes to releasing, really push it hard.
Earlier in her interview with Collider, Maisie Williams noted that The New Mutants wrapped principal photography last September, so there was going to be a quick turnaround from cameras rolling to the effects being developed in post-production to the movie's theatrical release. Williams knows from her time on Game of Thrones how much work goes into making a visually-dazzling project look great, so in her opinion, The New Mutants will benefit from being delayed 10 months. Plus, it will allow her, and by extension her co-stars, to get to know the project even better once they've come back for reshoots. If Williams' predictions are correct, then moviegoers will surely agree with her by around this time next year.
Maisie Williams is playing Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane, in The New Mutants, one of five teenaged mutants who have been trapped inside a secret facility. The main cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy's Illyana Rasputin, a.k.a. Magic; Charlie Heaton's Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; Henry Zaga's Roberto da Costa, a.k.a. Sunspot; Blu Hunt's Danielle Moonstar, a.k.a. Mirage; and Alice Braga's Cecilia Reyes. As shown in the teaser trailer, there will he a heavy horror bent to The New Mutants, though after 20th Century Fox announced the delay, there were conflicting reports about whether the reshoots might increase or decrease the scarier elements of the movie.
Directed by Josh Boone, The New Mutants is now being released in theaters on February 22, 2019. For movies still scheduled for this year, you can head over to our 2018 release schedule.
